After 4 years and 24 exhibits, the 950 Gallery, managed by Spaceworks Tacoma, will be closing its doors at the end of the month. Our building owner received a five-year offer from another business that we were unable to match. While we’ve benefitted from a flexible month-to-month lease, we also knew that this was a possible reality and we’re grateful for what we’ve accomplished since 2016. We’re unsure where we’ll land next, and we see this departure as an opportunity to realize some of our bigger dreams of space activation. In the short term, we’re focused on finding new homes for the forthcoming artist residencies and two of our subtenants.
The 950 Gallery provided a prominent downtown location for contemporary local artists and curators to host feature exhibitions–entirely of their own creation. The 24 exhibits were unique, culturally rich, historically significant, exploratory, and widely varied in form and content. Many were a catalyst for the community to come together, forming tighter bonds and furthering relationships. Some provided a launching pad for professional careers while others offered a retrospective. A full archive of the exhibits is available on our website.
Thank you the artists who shared their creative talents with our Tacoma community. Thank you to our Spaceworks supporters and local art patrons who faithfully celebrated each exhibition opening. And thank you to Artscapes coordinator Gabriel Brown and former program director Heather Joy for the vision and leadership required to launch the 950 Gallery. When we started we had no idea how it would evolve, and we celebrate the multitude of small and big wins that came about during its time.
